Is bathroom mold dangerous?

The upstairs bathroom shower has what appears to be mold, and you noticed that your dog caught an infection shortly after going into that shower. You’re thinking to yourself if the mold in the bathroom is dangerous.

Different types of mold spores exist, and some are dangerous. Allergenic mold can cause itchy, watery eyes, stuffy and runny nose, sneezing, and coughing. Pathogenic mold can cause breathing problems, and toxigenic mold causes severe health problems that can damage tissue.

Home mold testing

Testing for mold in your bathroom can be done in several ways, but if you see mold around your shower, this type of mold is typically not very dangerous, but the only way to honestly know is to get a sample and have it tested by a mold testing lab. You can use a cotton swab and gently press and slide the swab across the visible mold in your shower; it would be best to wear some latex gloves to prevent touching the mold. Place the sample in a sandwich bag, label the location, and put a number on it–get two pieces.

Mold air testing

Additionally, you should conduct a mold air test to obtain more data about other mold spores present in your bathroom. They come in different formats—Petri Dish, mechanical or electric pump. The best option is either the mechanical or electric pump, as these options can set a flow rate, which means that you can trap all the different colonies of mold spores. You can also collect non-viable spores that are also hazardous as they can contain mycotoxins.
