Testing yourself for mold is not possible without the assistance of a medical professional. However, if you ask if you can test for mold yourself, the short answer is “yes” you can test for mold yourself, providing that you have the right set of tools to do it.
Home mold testing
You can buy a home mold testing kit from your local hardware store, or you can also order one online. These kits come with instructions to guide you in the process. There is also the option to rent a mechanical or an electric pump to collect air samples for the presence of mold. These pumps are relatively accurate since they can be calibrated for airflow, which allows the ability to trap many colonies of mold spores, both viable and non-viable.
Mold testing cost
A home mold testing kit can be bought for just under $20, but you will have to pay for the labs separately, which will cost around $40-$50 each. The mold testing lab will send you the results by email, or hard copy, whichever you prefer. Doing it yourself will save you approximately $300. Renting a mechanical or electric pump will cost roughly $30-$40 per day. Some labs will let you use their pump at no cost if you send the samples back to them for testing. However, they will charge you $40-$50 to test each air sample.
