There’s a musty smell when you walk into the bathrooms, laundry room, and basement of your house. It also feels damp in some of these areas, and the bathroom has some small black spots on the ceiling. You don’t know if it’s mold, but you need it checked pronto. So how much does it cost to have your house tested for mold?
You can save some money by doing some of the work yourself, like getting the samples and sending them to a mold testing lab for analysis, and you will spend about $50 per sample to get the results. Or you can hire a professional inspector trained to detect mold, which will cost you about $355 for a complete inspection.
Home mold testing
If you want to take on the challenge of home mold testing, make sure you are appropriately geared up for the task by wearing a respirator and latex gloves. You also want to have an excellent secure ladder if you need to reach up to get a sample. You can cut a 3 square inch piece of the material or get a surface sample using a cotton swab or a portion of clear cellophane tape. Place your selections in a lockable sandwich bag and label it with a number and location. If you are using a piece of tape, place it in the sandwich bag.
Mold air testing
Conducting an air test for mold is an excellent way to gather information on your home’s type and the number of mold spores. You can rent an electric mold pump and purchase the mold traps used to collect the mold from a tool rental company or a mold testing lab, and some labs offer free pump rentals as long as they will be performing the lab test for you. Mold air tests provide a lot more information than other mold tests since the pump can be calibrated, thus capturing various colonies of mold; it is usually best to incorporate it with direct sampling methods.
