What are the symptoms of radon in your home?

If you suddenly find that you cough a lot and your mucus is bloody, have shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, you should immediately consult your doctor for assistance. It can also be a sign that there is a fair amount of radon gas inside your house. Exposure to high levels of radon gas over some time can cause cancer. The EPA recommends safe radon gas levels should be between 2 and 4 picocuries (pCi). If classes are at 4 (pCi) and above, it needs to be removed by a certified radon gas abatement professional.

How do radon tests work?

Radon gas is typically tested in a room located in the lowest living unit in your home; that is because radon gas slips through the earth’s cracks underneath your house and gets trapped inside. Before conducting a radon test, clear the area and ensure there is no access for at least 8 to 12 hours before the test, and all windows and doors must be shut for at least two days and up to 4 days during the testing period. The radon gas kit will collect an air sample using small canisters with charcoal. Once the sampling is complete, the equipment needs to be sent to a laboratory for analysis. If you bought a home radon test kit, there should be a laboratory address where you can send the equipment back for examination, and if the testing were performed by a professional, they would handle all the rest for you.

How to pass a radon test

Passing a radon gas test requires levels to be between 2 and 4 picocuries (pCi). If the number is at four picocuries (pCi) or above, you will need the radon gas removed from your home. At this point, you will need to find a certified radon gas abatement contractor to remove the gas. You might be able to find a radon abatement contractor through your local building department’s contactor’s list.

Radon testing cost

Pricing for radon testing can range from $15 for a do-it-yourself kit and upwards of $350 for a professional radon gas test performed on an average-sized home, which an individual will conduct with the credentials and expertise to do it properly.
