Where is radon most commonly found?

A senior couple recently downsized into a smaller home, and one of them—the wife—is a cancer survivor. They are concerned with the possibility that there is radon gas in this new home. Worried, they want this new house checked for radon gas.

Radon gas happens to be located below the surface, in the ground. It is a gas formed in the earth and escapes through the cracks, and it gets trapped inside a building. When the levels reach the equivalent of 4 (pCi), the EPA says to have it removed, as this colorless, odorless, tasteless gas can cause cancer. It is estimated that around 21,000 people in the US die from radon gas.

If you want to test radon, you can buy a kit from your local hardware store or online. However, it would be best to hire an experienced professional to set up your radon kit, conduct the test, provide a report, and help you understand the results. The consultant may even aid in removing radon gas, make suggestions to help control the radon gas or connect you with someone capable of remediating radon.

How do radon tests work?

Before performing a radon gas test, you will need to find a location in the lowest living area of your house, and this can be a basement or a closet where the kit can be set up for 2 to 4 days. The site must be restricted from access at least 8 hours before the sample is taken, and access to the area should also be limited for the test duration. No outside air is allowed in the space. You can, however, run a fan that is circulating air from inside or run a radon fan. Doors that have outside access should not be used during that time.

How to pass a radon test

To successfully pass a radon gas test, the results from your kit need to stay between 2 (pCi) and 4 (pCi). Anything at or above 4 (pCi) requires removing the gas from home.

Radon testing cost

You can probably purchase a radon gas test kit online for about $30, plus the cost of laboratory testing, but hiring a professional will cost you about $350 for the service as well as for the lab testing. But do some research, contact your nearest radon testing lab, ask what they charge for this service, and look for industrial hygienists and IAQ professionals who can perform the radon gas test.
