Looking to identify mysterious odors or airborne chemical exposure? Our VOC TO-15 air quality test helps identify over 100 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in your home or business. 5 Microns Inc. uses EPA-approved methods and laboratory-grade equipment to help you breathe cleaner air.
VOC TO-15 Air Quality Testing

What is VOC and why does it matter?
VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds—a large group of airborne chemicals released from many everyday materials such as:
- Paints, solvents, and cleaning agents
- Furniture, carpeting, and flooring adhesives
- Plastics, sealants, and personal care products
VOCs can accumulate indoors, especially in spaces with limited ventilation. Exposure to VOCs may cause symptoms like:
- Headaches, fatigue, or dizziness
- Irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat
- Worsened asthma or respiratory issues
High VOC exposure can have long-term effects. VOC testing is the first step toward identifying sources and improving your indoor air quality.

What is a TO-15 air quality test?
If you are experiencing a suspicious smell that you can’t quite figure out, suffer dizziness, feel lethargic, or have a burning sensation through your nasal passage, you may be suffering from VOCs—Volatile Organic Compounds—in your home. These compounds are the gassing off of various chemicals found in furniture, building materials, and household products.
The TO-15 test uses EPA Method TO-15 to analyze indoor air for over 100 VOCs using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). It’s considered the gold standard in VOC testing, providing compound-specific results with high accuracy.
How do you perform a TO-15 air quality test?
Our technician installs a 2″ x 1″ stainless steel SUMMA canister with an attached flow calibrator in the designated room. The device silently collects air over 8–24 hours. One canister covers about 1,500 sq ft. After collection, the sealed canister is sent to a certified lab for analysis under EPA TO-15 protocols.
How much is a TO-15 air quality test?
The service costs $1,232 for a 1–2 week turnaround. A library search upgrade is available for $130 to identify more obscure VOCs. A non-refundable $135 deposit per canister is required and applied to your balance.
What types of VOCs does a TO-15 test detect?
TO-15 detects a wide range of VOCs including formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, xylene, acetone, chloroform, styrene, and dozens more. These compounds are commonly emitted from paints, solvents, adhesives, plastics, flooring, and furnishings.
Is TO-15 testing safe to perform while I’m at home?
Yes. The canister silently collects air without releasing any substances. You can continue normal activity during testing—just avoid opening windows or using air purifiers near the unit to ensure accurate results.
What can I do if VOC levels are high?
If elevated VOCs are found, your report will list the chemical names and concentrations. We will offer guidance on next steps—like improving ventilation, replacing certain materials, or consulting an environmental remediation professional.
How accurate is TO-15 testing compared to handheld VOC meters?
TO-15 testing is far more accurate. While handheld meters give generalized “total VOC” values, TO-15 identifies specific compounds at ppb (parts per billion) or even ppt (parts per trillion) levels, making it highly precise and legally defensible.
Can TO-15 testing be used in legal or insurance cases?
Yes. TO-15 testing follows EPA standards and uses certified lab analysis, which means results are admissible in legal proceedings, tenant-landlord disputes, real estate transactions, and insurance investigations.
Can you test multiple rooms or zones with TO-15?
Yes. Each canister covers about 1,500 square feet. If you need to test multiple rooms, we can install additional canisters—each with its own deposit and lab analysis—to capture detailed data for every area of concern.
