What Are Soot, Char, and Ash?

Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, soot, char, and ash represent different types of combustion residue.

Soot

Soot consists primarily of fine, carbon-rich particles created through incomplete combustion. These particles can be extremely small, travel with smoke, enter enclosed spaces, and settle on surfaces that were never directly exposed to flames.

Soot may appear as black or gray staining, smearing, or fine surface deposits. However, soot is not always visible to the unaided eye.

Char

Char consists of partially burned material that retains some of the physical characteristics of the original material. Char fragments can be produced when wood, paper, vegetation, furnishings, and other materials do not burn completely.

Ash

Ash is the mineral and noncombustible residue remaining after materials burn. Its appearance and chemical composition depend on the materials involved in the fire.

Ash from burned vegetation can differ substantially from ash generated by buildings, vehicles, electronics, plastics, coatings, fuels, and treated materials.

When Is Soot, Char, or Ash Testing Appropriate?

Testing may be appropriate after:

Can Soot Be Present Without Visible Smoke Damage?

Yes. A building can contain soot or other combustion particles without obvious staining or direct fire damage.

Fine particles can enter a building through open doors, windows, air intakes, roof vents, wall penetrations, attached garages, and ordinary gaps in the building envelope. Once inside, they may settle on horizontal surfaces, fabrics, electronics, ventilation components, and other contents.

Recently cleaned or lightly affected properties may contain microscopic residues that cannot be reliably evaluated through visual observation alone.

Microscopic Testing for Combustion Particles

Surface samples may be examined microscopically for particles consistent with soot, char, ash, and other combustion-related material.

Microscopic examination can help evaluate whether a collected deposit contains combustion particles rather than only ordinary environmental dust, fibers, soil, pollen, skin cells, or other background debris.

The laboratory findings must be interpreted with:

  • Building airflow

A laboratory result represents the collected sample and should not automatically be applied to every surface or room in the building.

Bulk samples may be collected when there is a sufficient quantity of ash, debris, settled dust, insulation, or other suspect material available for analysis.

Bulk sampling can be useful when:

  • Ash accumulated on a surface
  • Fire debris entered the property
  • Material was collected before cleanup
  • Contamination is suspected in an attic or crawlspace
  • Outdoor deposits require characterization
  • Additional chemical analysis is needed

The analytical method should be chosen according to the suspected material and the decisions that will be based on the results.

An investigation may consider:

  • Whether the system operated during the fire
  • Outdoor-air intake locations
  • Filter condition and replacement history
  • Accessible supply and return components
  • Deposits near registers
  • Differences between occupied areas
  • Cleaning already performed
  • Whether odors appear when the system operates

HVAC observations and samples should be interpreted as part of the overall investigation. A sample from one register cannot necessarily establish the condition of the entire ventilation system.

Testing Furniture and Personal Property
