Detection of asbestos in building materials requires collecting and examining small samples from 1 cubic inch to 3 square inches depending on the material sampled. The EPA recommends the number of samples collected per building material.

Asbestos survey work performed by 5 Microns Inc. meets regulatory inspection requirements enforced by federal, state, and local agencies, including Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), WAC 296-62-077 (WISHA) and 40 CFR Part 61 (NESHAP) and 29 CFR Part 1926.1101 (OSHA).

Our inspector bags photograph, document each sample he collects and completes’ a chain of custody form. The inspector will draw a map indicating where the samples were collected and return the pieces with the chain of custody form to the lab for evaluation using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM).

Results take two business days, and we offer next-day and same-day service. Our survey takes approximately half an hour to three hours for a multi-unit commercial asbestos inspection.

Residential Asbestos Testing Cost:
The asbestos service call is from $440, including four samples, a survey, and a complete report. Each additional sample is $37 per sample layer; each layer is considered a separate sample. *Please note: Additional sample layers can not be determined until the material is placed under a microscope in the lab. For example, drywall has several layers: the sheetrock,  surface texture, the tape, and the mud, totaling three samples; popcorn ceiling texture is usually just one sample layer. The information will be available in five business days. The final cost will be determined based on your location from our office. There will be payment options on the invoice for you to choose from. We also offer drop-off and mail-in asbestos testing. The cost is $37 per sample layer. *Note that each layer is considered a sample if classified as ACM–asbestos-containing material. Please carefully follow the instructions below to drop off or mail a sample.

The standard turnaround time is two business days. We also offer next-day turnaround time if the samples arrive at the lab by 2 PM, and there is a $200 fee. Same-day service is available. Call for a quote.

*PLEASE NOTE FOR ALL DROP-OFFS: All samples must be dropped off at the back of the office building located at 7100 Fort Dent Way, Tukwila, WA, outside the Tabor 100 Office and placed inside our black drop-box. Do not take your samples to the front desk. The front desk will not accept drop-offs over the counter,
NO EXCEPTIONS

Your sample must be placed in a separate bag, and the form must not touch the material, or the lab technicians will reject it. Make sure the paperwork and the samples are in one larger bag so that we can associate your pieces with the paperwork you filled out.

IMPORTANT-MUST READ FIRST: All mail-in samples must have a tracking number and include our asbestos chain of custody form to be processed. If you miss the chain of custody form, your piece (s) will not be accepted. Drop-offs MUST have the COC form inside your package, but not in the sample bag. DO NOT MAIL YOUR SAMPLES BY FIRST-CLASS MAIL. Send your sample(s) via USPS Priority Mail, UPS, and FedEx. It is essential to closely follow these directions so our asbestos testing lab can promptly process your sample(s).
