You’ve been working from home due to the recent pandemic. However, you started to feel sick, but your physician ruled out any of the symptoms of the current pandemic. You have itchy skin, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, and constantly sneezing and coughing. It could be due to poor indoor air quality. As soon as you get outside for twenty minutes, your symptoms disappear.

Several factors contribute to poor indoor air quality, which may cause allergic reactions. Chieftain among them is humidity; you should keep your home’s humidity level between 30 & 45%, and keeping your home well-ventilated by opening the windows an inch for at least two hours per day will help remove some of the allergens or contaminants. However, Poor indoor air quality can be caused by poor indoor air circulation and ventilation, dirty air ducts, humidity or high moisture levels, settled dust, dust mites, VOCs, and mold. You should always seek the advice of your primary care physician first when you suspect that your symptoms are related to poor air quality to confirm your suspicions.

Moisture attracts dust mites, mold, cockroaches, and rodents. Remove the grill covers on your air duct registers and see if they contain debris; if they do, it indicates delayed maintenance, and you need to have the ducts cleaned. When you turn on the furnace or A/C, the air will carry the debris into the air you breathe, and the dust will settle on furnishings, your skin, food, etc. Keeping your home clean and as dry as possible should help alleviate your symptoms.

If your symptoms persist after doing those mentioned above, speak to your doctor. You should also hire a professional air quality inspector to investigate the matter further. The expert will inspect and recommend the best action to deal with the problem. They will produce a report you can use when consulting your physician.
