After living as a bachelor in the house you bought fifteen years ago, you and the girl you’ve been dating for the last couple of years decide to make it official; you all get engaged and move in together. You already know that she’s not going to like your taste in decorating or lack thereof. So you’re not surprised when she tells you that she wants to redecorate the house by first knocking down some walls, removing the popcorn texture on the ceilings, replacing the old vinyl flooring, etc.
Removing the popcorn texture on the ceilings is the first item you want to tackle, but you want to make sure there is no asbestos in it since the house was built in 1980. The fact is that wall texturing material, which is considered anything that contains the EPA, banned asbestos which can be sprayed or troweled on as of 1978. However, many homes into the early 1980s may still have popcorn ceiling texture that contains asbestos since there were stockpiles of the material leftover that could be used.
How to test for asbestos
If you want to make sure that your popcorn texture is free from asbestos before removing it, there is a simple and easy process. You will need two samples—from different sides of the room or from 2 totally different rooms to ensure you have no false positives. You might need more pieces if the texture was done from other years. Get a good step ladder, or extension ladder, a knife, a half-mask respirator with P100 magenta cartridges, Ziploc® sandwich bags, a marker, and a spray bottle with soapy water. Cut at least two pieces of 3 square inches each and place them in individual bags. Make sure not to add anything else to them. Label each bag with a number and location.
Asbestos testing lab
You will need to find an asbestos testing lab to test the material for the presence of asbestos. You can find one by doing a simple google search. The lab will examine the samples by Light Polarized Microscopy and provide results showing the presence, type, and percentage of asbestos.
Asbestos testing cost
You can get an asbestos test for about $25 per sample layer. Some items have multiple layers of materials classified as asbestos-containing and must be tested, such as vinyl sheeting—the vinyl and the mastic (glue) are each a sample, as both are ACMs.
