One of our clients moved into a new house with a newborn baby. He was concerned about the air quality, especially about the presence of asbestos in the air. He wanted to know if he should get an asbestos test to ensure they weren’t breathing asbestos and other airborne contaminants. So he asked if he should get an asbestos test.
The only time you need to test something for asbestos is when the asbestos-containing material has been or will be disturbed. So, for instance, let’s say that our client has old linoleum flooring that dates back to the mid-70s and wants to remove this flooring, which would cause the asbestos in the flooring to be disturbed, so it would need to be tested for the presence of asbestos to control the release of fibers.
How to test for asbestos
Getting material tested for asbestos is very simple. All you need to do is gather a few tools and prepare yourself to collect samples. Get a good knife, a couple of sandwich bags, a marker, some latex gloves, a mask, a spray bottle with a couple of soap droplets. Cut two pieces of 3-inch square in two different spots, place them in separate bags and label each one with a number and location. Try doing this task when you are alone in the room and close all windows, doors, and any ventilation system in the room.
After collecting the pieces, you can send them to an asbestos testing lab for analysis. You can conduct an internet search for “asbestos testing lab near me” for a local lab, or you can mail in an asbestos sample for testing at a lab outside of your area. The lab technician will utilize the Polarized Light Microscopy method to examine the material for asbestos. The final results will show what type of asbestos is present and the percentage.
How much does asbestos testing cost?
Getting samples tested for asbestos doesn’t have to be expensive. You can get an asbestos test for between $25 per sample, up to about $50 each. But an air sample will cost you about $155 for the service call and $27 per sample. The air sample would need to be performed by a trained technician.
