Starting a consulting business with no experience

Start environmental consulting business

If you’ve worked in any industry for at least six months, you may have enough of the requisite skills to start a career as a consultant. Maybe you’ve worked in the Information Technology industry and learned how to perform telephone or deskside troubleshooting, or you have skills in dealing with medical software and hardware products. Perhaps you worked for an environmental consulting firm for a couple of years and learned how to perform an asbestos survey, mold inspection, and indoor air quality check. Still, you’re fed up working for someone else and not getting your worth. If you want more freedom and income, then maybe striking out on your own and starting your consultancy is the answer. However, you may be intimidated by the task because you lack the skills and experience to start a business, don’t be; you can do it.

You first want to start making an inventory of your skills, strengths, and weaknesses. Study the market, find out your direct competition, and learn how they operate, who their customers are, what they are known for, and why. You will need to differentiate yourself from your competitors, but it doesn’t have to be something that is earth-shattering; it could just be that you have better marketing skills, you know how to build relationships, a specialized skill, or offer a combination of services that your competition is not providing. You can make up for deficiencies by self-study or taking professional classes to get certified and taking on a partner with the skills, but be careful with taking on partners; it could be a disaster.

One of the most vital parts of the process is to write a good business plan; it will be your roadmap to success. Your business plan is a living document that you will refer to and modify as needed from time to time. In the beginning, you will work alone, but a bookkeeper, CPA, and an attorney will be essential. You can learn how to keep your books and save money in the first year. Consider taking a bookkeeping class. However,  once you start getting busy,  you’ll need to focus on building your business and not preparing books. Your CPA and attorney can help you decide the type of entity formation and help register your business, or you can do it yourself. It is also essential to build a good relationship with a bank.

Starting a consultancy doesn’t have to cost much; you’ll need the essential tools for your trade, computer equipment, software, and furniture to do your work. Depending on the nature of your business, you might even be able to start from home.

When choosing your business’s name, make sure you can buy a domain name that will match before settling on a name for your business. For now, you can build an essential website using a WordPress template and claim your business name from google business. A good SEO professional can assist you with this for a very reasonable fee. Join professional networking associations and a local chamber of commerce to get things started.
