So here at 5 Microns Inc., we receive many questions about air quality, but we mainly get many questions about mold. One, in particular, is if mold can be removed entirely from their house. While it might seem like a good idea, it is not only impractical but also unrealistic.
Mold is an organic matter that is part of our ecosystem. You can’t remove mold from your house and keep it out. It gets in when you open doors, windows and slips in through the cracks. You should be concerned with if the mold in your home is at high levels of allergenic, pathogenic, or toxigenic. If the mold spores in your house are high, you need to identify the source of the problem and address it so you can return them to acceptable levels.
Home mold testing
The only way to tell if mold spore levels at your house are acceptable or high is to do a mold test. If you see visible evidence of mold, you can collect a direct sample either by cutting a 3 square inch piece of the material, taking a tape lift sample, or using a cotton swab and swabbing the surface with it. You can also obtain air samples for non-visible spores.
Mold air testing
Think you have mold in your house, and no matter where you look, you can’t see the evidence; you should conduct a mold air test using a Petri Dish, mechanical or electric pump. An electric pump also called a low volume pump, is utilized for most home mold tests. The pump can be calibrated to a specific flow rate, allowing it to capture different colonies of mold spores in the air and viable and non-viable mold spores. The mold is captured by a mold trap, which is connected to the top of the pump.
