One day you went into your basement storage room looking for an item; while taking out some boxes, you find what you suspect is mold all over the drywall. You have read somewhere that mold can make you sick, so you want to know if it’s safe to live in a house with mold.
It’s important to know that just because there is mold in your house, it doesn’t make it necessarily dangerous for you to live there. Mold will always be present inside your home because it is an organic matter. Still, the concern with indoor mold is that it can be at high levels and either allergenic, pathogenic, or toxigenic. It is incredibly unhealthy if these spores are present and elevated. You will start getting symptoms that will make you feel sick—itchy watery eyes, fatigue, sneezing, tightness of the chest, and fever. Toxigenic mold has the potential to produce mycotoxins, which will prevent oxygen from taking protein to the rest of your body.
Home mold testing
To know if the mold in your house is safe to live with, you will need it tested. You can buy do-it-yourself kits online or in a hardware store; you can rent equipment to test for mold, take samples and take them to a mold testing lab for analysis, or hire an industrial hygienist to do so the work. It all depends on how comfortable you feel about your abilities to do the testing yourself, or if you want to hire someone with the knowledge and expertise, how accurate you want the results to be, and if you can interpret the results on your own. Some mold testing labs may help you understand the results, ask them if they will.
Mold air testing
if you can’t see any visible mold, but you can smell it, or the room feels damp, an air test is the best option to uncover the presence of mold. Choose between a Petri Dish or an electric pump. But if you want accuracy, the electric pump will be your best option, as it can gather more spore information than a Petri Dish.
