How do you test paint for lead?

Now that it’s summer, you’re ready to tackle home projects that have been on your mind for some time. One of these projects is to apply a fresh coat of paint to the exterior of your house. After contacting a painting contractor, you learn that the paint needs to be tested for lead before the contractor can paint it because your home was built in 1972, and lead-based paint was used during that time. Lead-based paint causes significant health risks and must be dealt with caution to prevent adverse health effects.

Lead paint home inspection

Now that you’ve been made aware of the dangers lead-based paint can cause, it’s time to get the exterior paint on your house tested for the presence of lead in the paint. This task is preferably done by a certified lead paint renovator or anyone certified to work with lead-based paint. The inspector will cut about a 3 square inch section of the paint chip, place it in a labeled container, and prepare the necessary documentation for the collected samples. The samples will then be sent to a lead testing lab for analysis by Flame AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy). The laboratory can provide results in percentage, weight, and PPM (Parts Per Million).

Lead paint test cost

The cost to test for lead in paint depends on whether you collect the samples yourself and send them to a lab or hire a professional to work for you. But expect to pay $50 per sample layer if you take the pieces yourself, about $150 for the professional service call, and $35 to $45 per sample. Hiring a professional will give you the peace of mind to do it correctly and prevent you from being exposed.
