What does an air quality test detect?

After closing on a new house, you are now ready to move in with a newborn baby. This new home will be where your family will grow and build countless memories. Since this house was a flip—it was an old building that needed to be gutted and remodeled—there are odors from freshly installed building materials, and you’re concerned with the air quality. But before getting an indoor air quality test, you want to know what it will detect.

Home air quality test

An air quality test is performed to detect levels of airborne particulates and contaminants. There are many air quality tests available, but no one size fits all tests that can detect everything and give you results. You can purchase a home air quality device to detect some pollutants. You can also hire an indoor air quality consultant to collect air samples and submit them to an air quality testing lab for analysis. The most common types of home air quality tests are for asbestos, lead, mold, VOC’s—Volatile Organic Compounds, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and radon gas. However, there are many more.

How to test air quality

Various types of devices can be purchased or rented on the market to test air quality. You can use an electric pump with a mold trap to test for mold in the air, a mechanical diaphragm pump with an attached air cassette for airborne asbestos or lead, and a canister for VOCs. You may perform these tests yourself, but some of these tests would be best achieved by an industrial hygienist.

Indoor air quality testing cost

Assuming this is a home and depending on what you want to detect through an air quality test, prices can range widely, especially if it is a multi-room test. You can expect to spend between $550-$2500.
