It’s time to celebrate; you are no longer living in your parent’s basement with your new fiancée, and you both saved enough money to buy a lovely little house of your own in the city. Still, it’s older and possibly has material that contains asbestos. Before getting an update, you need to check for asbestos.
How to test for asbestos
Checking for asbestos is a simple process; you need to know what to do to collect the samples safely and adequately. I recommend getting white Tyvek® coveralls, a half-face respirator with P100 filters, a latex glove, a spray bottle with a couple of drops of dish detergent, a sharp knife, and some Ziploc® sandwich bags. Ensure that no one near the work area turns off all fans and close windows and doors that allow air in the room to prevent blowing asbestos fibers everywhere. Spray the site and then cut about a 3 square inch piece of the building material and place it in a bag that you will number and label the location. Get at least two parts of each. Once you are done, slowly remove your suit by rolling it off into a ball, spraying the knife with soapy water, wiping it clean, then placing the coveralls and dirty wipes in a trash bag. Twist the to several times and fold the top once, and tape it shut.
Once all the samples are collected, find a local asbestos testing lab, or go online to find one. The asbestos lab technician will test your models using Polarized Light Microscopy, which will show the presence, type, and percentage of asbestos.
Asbestos testing cost
Many labs will charge around $40 to $60 per sample if you get the pieces yourself. However, hiring an AHERA inspector who will perform an asbestos survey will cost about $250 to $550 in labor. Still, they will conduct the study following EPA guidelines.
