Some time ago, your father-in-law mentioned before scraping off the popcorn ceiling in your living room, you should have the texture tested for the presence of asbestos to prevent a health hazard in the event there are airborne asbestos fibers. So how do you test for asbestos? That is a fair question and let me explain.
How do you test for asbestos?
When you want to test for asbestos, there are a couple of ways to go about it—doing it yourself or hiring an expert to do the work for you. Both have plus and minuses. Doing it yourself is much cheaper since you will be doing the work yourself, but the drawback is that there are some essential details that you may be missing and that can only be known by a professional. If you are testing some asbestos-containing building material for remodeling work you will be doing yourself, then collecting the sample yourself to have it tested is ok. Still, when a contractor performs the construction work, they may require the sampling and testing done by a certified AHERA inspector—a licensed person to carry out the task of conducting an asbestos survey. But the asbestos inspector comes at an additional cost.
If you are doing the work yourself, you can purchase an asbestos testing kit online or through a retailer near you. The asbestos testing kit will include instructions showing how to collect samples needed for the testing. Note that doing the testing yourself, you run the risk of getting less than accurate results instead of having it done by a professional since you might not be aware of some critical details that would require specialized training to do so.
Asbestos testing cost
Doing the asbestos testing yourself can be pretty easy and cheap; you can figure on spending about $20 or less for the kit, plus $40 per sample, plus the cost of shipping back the asbestos testing kit to the asbestos testing lab for analysis. Once the lab receives your model, they will examine it under a PLM microscope for the presence, type, and percentage of asbestos.
