After moving into your beautiful new condo, you start to notice a musty odor that you suspect is mold, but there are no apparent signs of mold while looking around the whole apartment. You begin to feel tired after spending just a couple of hours are home, and you also notice that when you leave for less than an hour, you start to feel better, and when you return home, the symptoms start over again. The problem you think is mold inside the walls, but how do you detect mold in the walls?
Home mold testing
There are a couple of options available to test for mold in the walls. You can cut a piece of the wall to see if there is mold behind it, and a Borescope is also an excellent option to look for mold in the walls. If there is mold, or you suspect that there is mold, cut a 3 square inch piece and place it in a ziploc© bag, label it with a number and the location. Be sure to wear gloves and a mask before doing this to protect your health.
Once the samples are collected, it is time to find a local mold testing lab to examine them for mold. The lab will use the PCM method—Phase Contrast Microscopy—to detect mold in the wall samples and send you the results either by email or mail out a hard copy. Your mold testing lab should also interpret the results for you to understand them.
Mold testing cost
To get samples tested for mold will cost you around $50 per sample with standard turnaround times of about three business days, and perhaps more for any available rush services. It might be worth your while to consider hiring an expert to conduct an inspection, as this professional will also provide valuable information and perform a thorough examination. Hiring an expert can cost $200.

Mold air testing
Conducting an air test for mold is an excellent way to gather information on your home’s type and the number of mold spores. You can rent an electric mold pump and purchase the mold traps used to collect the mold from a tool rental company or a mold testing lab, and some labs offer free pump rentals as long as they will be performing the lab test for you. Mold air tests provide a lot more information than other mold tests since the pump can be calibrated, thus capturing various colonies of mold; it is usually best to incorporate it with direct sampling methods.
