There is a popcorn ceiling at your home that you don’t want to look at and want to be removed, but you hear that it may have asbestos in it. Concerned about the risks associated with disturbing asbestos, you try to find an affordable way to test for asbestos at home.
How to test for asbestos
You can’t test for asbestos at home yourself unless you have the proper laboratory equipment and training to do so. However, you can collect the suspected material and submit it to an asbestos testing lab for analysis. You will need some tools to get samples of the popcorn ceiling texture. Get a good sharp knife, some latex gloves, a good stool or ladder, a jar or lockable sandwich baggies, and a spray bottle with two drops of detergent. Once you have gathered all the tools, spray the surface with the water to prevent fibers from becoming airborne and cut a 3-inch square piece. Then place the sample in the jar or plastic bag. Label the container with a number and its location. Repeat the process in at least two different locations. Wipe all your tools when done. Now you are ready to drop these samples at an asbestos testing lab. The laboratory you choose may be local or out of your state. You can buy asbestos testing kits in a big box store or online to show you how to submit a sample to them.
Asbestos testing cost
Pricing for asbestos testing varies, but most asbestos testing labs charge around $40 per sample to test for asbestos. They mostly use the PLM—Polarized Light Microscopy—method to detect asbestos and produce results showing a description, type, and percentage.
