Your last apartment had mold, but you moved all your personal belongings and furniture to your new home, and you’re concerned that some of your furniture has mold. So how do you check for mold on furniture?
How to test for mold
If you see mold on your furniture, it’s time to let it go. Completely getting rid of mold on furniture is almost impossible, especially if the mold is deep in the fabric, wood, or leather. Just throw it out. Keeping this furniture could make you sick, and the spores can spread. But if you can’t see the mold, there could still be mold on the furniture. To check for mold on furniture, you can use a piece of cellophane tape. Just cut a piece of tape, adhere it to the furniture, gently remove it, place the tape on a small sandwich bag, label it with a number, and the item sampled. Be careful when using this method on wood furniture; for example, you may end up damaging the surface. A gentler way to collect a sample from furniture is to use a cotton swab. Swab the surface of the furniture to get a piece and place it in a bag. Label it with a number and furniture name.
How much does mold testing cost?
After collecting the samples, it’s time to find out if there is mold on your furniture. You will likely find mold because mold is everywhere. However, make sure that what is found on your furniture is not elevated, allergenic, pathogenic, or toxigenic. You can find a local mold testing lab, or you may be able to find an excellent accredited mold testing lab online to process your samples. It will probably cost around $40-$50 per sample. The lab will send you the results and perhaps help interpret them.
